Alzheimer’s Disease
There will be over 2.5 million American’s turning 65 years of age each year starting in 2011. They are the post WWll baby boomers. Starting now, one in eight of the baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s Disease over the next several years and by the time they reach age 85, one in two or 50% will have Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s Disease may become the “Plague” of the 21st Century and it does not differentiate between race, religion, education or financial status.
Wanting to meet the challenges of care and behavior that are unique to Alzheimer’s Disease, in early 2010 the owners of Carefree Homecare set out to develop a special and comprehensive care program that would be unique within the home care industry in Arizona. In November that year the company announced the creation and implementation of their “Alzheimer’s Directed Care Program.”
Alzheimer’s Directed Care Program
This program was developed under the guidance and instruction of Dr. Verna Benner-Carson along with Carefree’s nurse and Carefree’s training manager, both of whom have over 30 years of combined experience in training and caring for those with Alzheimer’s. Our program integrates behavior intervention, music, art, exercise and other dimensions of recognized memory care into managing our Alzheimer’s Directed Care Program.
Many facets of this care program are just as you would find them in the best memory care community, except it all happens in the safety and familiar surroundings of the client’s home. Through the teachings of Dr. Carson we learned the “Theory of Retrogenesis” Care, or (Back to Birth). Creating our own training program from Dr. Carson’s “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer ” program we believe we now have the most advanced in-home directed care program in the Arizona home care industry.
Alzheimer’s Whisperers
At the heart of the program is an 8-hour directed care training program provided by the Foundation for Senior Living. Following this training a caregiver must complete the company’s own 4 to 5 hour directed care program. Caregivers who successfully complete both training programs become certified as an “Alzheimer’s Whisperers ” caregiver.
These caregivers have been trained to recognize symptomatic conditions exhibited by a person with Alzheimer’s Disease. They have been trained in applying the “Theory of Retrogenesis” care to the management of challenging behaviors. Knowledge of a person’s cognitive level allows the caregiver to modify interventions that are appropriate for the individual’s cognitive ability.
